The path to becoming an American citizen is a long one. Once you have completed the process, you can now live out the “American Dream” of creating a better life for you and your loved ones right here in San Antonio, Texas. However, there are some steps that you should take after you have become a U.S. citizen.

Now that you are a U.S. citizen, you have a voice in local, state and national elections. You can register to vote by mail, online, at public assistance offices or when you renew your driver’s license. Having a voice in the election of your leaders is one of the greatest rights given to American citizens.

Obtain a certificate of citizenship for your child

In many cases, children who are not yet 18 years old may be granted permanent U.S. citizenship on the day you naturalize. You can obtain this certificate of citizenship for your child by using the required forms or applying for a U.S. passport.

Update your social security record

Updating your file with the Social Security Administration is one of the most important things you can do. You will need a valid social security number to apply for jobs, government assistance and other benefits available to American citizens.

Sponsor family members to come to the U.S.

Once you are granted citizenship, you can petition the U.S. government for immediate relatives to join you in America. You will have to confirm that you can financially support any relatives who join you in the U.S. for your petition to be granted.

You already know that the citizenship and naturalization process is a legal one that requires the help of an attorney. Taking steps, such as sponsoring family members to join you in the U.S., is also a legal process, meaning you should consult with a lawyer who can guide you through that process.
