Immigrants looking to permanently call Texas home must go through the naturalization process. In order to get started, they must determine their eligibility for doing so after having a green card for at least five years. If it’s determined that they’re eligible to apply, they will need to follow the naturalization process below.
Complete an Application for Naturalization
The first step in applying for U.S. naturalization is to submit an application. This is known as the Application for Naturalization or Form N-400. You can find this form online at the USCIS website. As part of the application, you’ll need to gather documents to demonstrate your eligibility for naturalization. These required documents are listed with the instructions of Form N-400.
Submit your application and pay the fee
When you go to submit your N-400, you’ll need to pay an application fee. This fee is $640 per application. In the event that you need to have biometrics done, you’ll need to add an additional $85 to the application fee. This brings it to a total of $725. Fees can be paid via credit card or check.
Show up to your interview
Once your application is submitted, you’ll receive a letter in the mail regarding your interview. USCIS will automatically schedule your naturalization interview for you. If you need to have your biometrics assessed, you’ll receive information in the mail regarding that appointment as well.
Take an Oath of Allegiance
If USCIS grants you approval for Form N-400, you’ll receive a notice regarding an appointment for your Oath of Allegiance. In some cases, you may be able to take the oath on the same day as your interview. Once you take your Oath of Allegiance, you officially become a U.S. citizen.
